Burne Hogarth checklist

Burne Hogarth's Drago

Most commonly known Drago reprints are the following, the foreign editions mentioned only if there is some significance:

1. Drago (The Adventures of Drago)
Southdown Press 1940'ies Australia
Tip-Top comics series. Black and white comics with clear reproduction of the strip. As this comic book is already over 60 years old the paper is very fragile and at least in my copy the fading of the ink is already visible. The story is abridged to mere 30 plus pages so more than one third of the art is missing. Another interesting fact is that the cover art is signed by "Ed Smith".

2. Drago El Baron Zodiac
Noveno Arte 1973 Spain (in Spanish)
Colour. Modern colouring. This hardcover collection Is most propably the only colour edition existing despite the fact it is recolored.

3. Drago
Pasific Comics Club 1985
Black and white reproduction. Quality is just adequate. Big portion of the line art is faded away supposedly unintentionally.

Original appearance:

Sunday November 4th 1945 onwards until November 10th 1946.
Drago was published at the time at least in NY Post and The Chicago Sun. There was quite a few other papers also but these are the ones I have heard of.

Burne Hogarth's Tarzan

Tarzan daily strips

Hogarth signed Tarzan dailies from August to December 1947. Panel numbers 2509-2616. However in practise these pages have been said to be done by Dan and Sy Barry under Hogarth's supervision.

Hardbound, 52pp. B&w reprintings of Sunday pages 5/5/40-4/27/41

3. The Golden Age of Tarzan 1939-1942
Chelsea House 1977
Facsimile edition, signed and numbered from an edition of 2000. Russ Cochran produced also Sunday page black & white print (on heavy paper) to accompany the very few copies of this book he sold. This print was also signed and numbered (number marked /1000) and contained the same number as in the book it accompanied. The print came folded. The edition with the print is extremely hard to find. I have noticed that the price for this item in VF/NM goes around 300-500 us dollars. The book with the print command prices about 100 dollar higher than the book without.

4. Tarzan book 1 & 2 (of 4 part series)
Blackthorne 1986
7”x10” b&w comic book. Reproduction in small format and just adequate quality.

5. Tarzan in Color
Nantier-Beall-Minoustchine (NBM) Publishing 1992-1997
Reprint series. The best and complete Foster/Hogarth Tarzan reprint series. The signed and numbered editions of this series were also sold to subscribers with matching numbers if ordered directly from NBM. I believe the number of complete series with matching numbers is not commonly known (I have matching numbers of 102/xxx). The dust jackets (and also the cloth cover) of the limited editions includes a gilt notice marking the limited edition. Limited edition books are signed on the special signature page and are bound in real cloth (regular editions are not bound in real cloth).  Softcover editions of this 18-part series were also planned (as 9-part softcover series starting 1997). In this series one softcover should have collected the material of two hardcover books. Only the first two softcover books in this series were published. The only information about the printing sizes was obtained from ebay listing and it is not confirmed. However the informed and not confirmed numbers were as follows for the hardcover editions: volumes 1-14 2000 copies printed, volumes 15-18 500 copies printed.

6. The Complete Burne Hogarth Sundays and Dailies Library

Titan Books 2014-
Description of the series as written in Titanbooks.com: “Four exclusive volumes that will collect all of Hogarth’s newspaper strips. Beginning with the adventures “Tarzan in the City of Gold” and continuing with “Tarzan and the Boers,” Hogarth and writer Don Garden hit the ground running, and produced some of the most acclaimed stories ever to appear in the pages of newspapers worldwide.”

This series is a newest attempt to collect all Hogarth’s Tarzan Sundays and dailies into one series of books. 4 books in total. I was originally really looking forward for this series but the realization is not as good as I would have expected. In some sources it was even mentioned that Peter Maresca is involved in restoration. The outcome is, let’s say, ok. It was a time that these comics are reprinted but the overall quality is not matching with earlier editions, in here I use NBM series as a comparison. The size for one looks fine but when opening the book the panels does look a bit too small. Also the clarity of the printing and line drawing is not in a level I would have liked it to be. Here I have to admit that it’s fine to read but if you want premium quality printing where you can enjoy Hogarth’s art as it should be shown then this is not the book for you. As a comic book it still is quite nice.

Published works and reprintings. Not including how-to books, Drago and Tarzan comic books which have they own sections

1. Tarzan of the Apes promotional print
Watson-Guptill ~1972
Cover painting of the book without the texts and printed in heavy stock with large envelope to protect it. This print was available only at ABA bookseller’s convention 1972. Scarce.
To celebrate the publication of Burne Hogarth's graphic novel adaptation of Edgar Rice Burrough's Tarzan of the Apes, the publisher, Watson-Guptil, printed a full color heavy archival cardstock print of the cover art hand coloured by Burne Hogarth.

2. Jungle Tales of Tarzan promotional print
Watson-Guptill ~1974
Signed and numbered black and white print of an edition of 540. To celebrate the publication of Burne Hogarth's graphic novel adaptation of Edgar Rice Burrough's Jungle Tales of Tarzan, the publisher, Watson-Guptil, sponsored a showing of Burne Hogarth's original art for the book at the famous Puck Gallery in New York City in 1974.  To commemorate the occasion this limited edition print of 540 was printed and hand signed and numbered by Burne Hogarth.  This 18"x24" print on heavy archival card stock was printed directly from the original art and is the same size. There was also a colour version of this print. For the colour edition I do not have any publication information.

3. Tarzan of the Apes promotional print
Watson-Guptill 1977?
To commemorate the special gallery showing of Burne Hogarth’s artwork in New York 1977 a limited edition was released in an edition of 100. Each limited edition print was hand signed and numbered by Burne Hogath in 1977.  This 14"x19" print on heavy archival card stock was printed directly from the original art and is the same size. This print is most probably from the 1972 batch of Tarzan of the Apes promotional prints.

4. Jungle Tales of Tarzan portfolio
Watson-Guptill 1977
Signed and numbered of an edition of 100. Contains twelve (12) 16 x 20 inch cardstock prints in a special Jungle Tales of Tarzan printed envelope. The first print is signed and numbered by Burne Hogarth. Extremely rare. The first signed plate has also been offered for sale as a separate print few times as well as some other prints from the set. Price estimate somewhere around or above 300 us dollars. Watson-Guptil gave these portfolios away at trade shows at the late seventies. Of the total amount of 100 portfolios Burne Hogarth kept ten for himself. In 1980 he sold 5 of these ten to Richard Pryor. The set in my possession is one of those five.

5. King Arthur lithograph
Richard Pryor? 1978
20 x 25.5 inch. Promotional print to promote King Arthur portfolios. Same drawing as was used in the King Arthur portfolio 1 cover.

Richard Pryor ~1979
S&N 150, 19 x 24 inch, rare, very limited print on strathmore archival paper, size is almost as in the original. The prints “Final battle between Arthur and Mordred” and “Seduction of Guinevere by Lancelot” were sold as a set with matching numbers.

S&N 1500, 29 x 37 cm. 6 b/w plates in illustrated slipcase, signed on first plate.

10. King Arthur silver and bronze medallions.
Richard Pryor (Collector’s Press).
These were originally meant to be released in conjunction with the King Arthur Portfolio. Burne Hogarth sculpted a medal to be affixed to the front of the first 150 leather bound slip cased Portfolios. The first three medallions were done from in silver as the first three Portfolios were to be the recipients of .999 solid silver striking. The rest were meant to be released with the solid bronze medallion. Each medallion is numbered in the edge from 1 to 150. The publication of these leatherbound slipcases newer realized. The medallions were sold separately.

15. The Arcane Eye of Hogarth

Release in 3 versions; SC, HC and limited edition HC which was S&N from an edition of 300. Sketchbook. 2-colour.

16. The Life of King Arthur portfolio 1
17. Das Leben König Arthur portfolio 1
Norbert Hethke Verlag 1993
S&N 500 (1100 worldwide), 40 x 50 cm, 5 colour and one b/w plate in an illustrated folder, illustrated tipped-in signature plate, same as portfolio 1 from 1983 except in colour and larger size. In my own opinion this is one of the best Hogarth items ever published. This is actually rather special publication. Upon publication I saw this portfolio for sale in only one source in united states, Fantagraphics books printed catalog. At that time it has rather heavy price of 125 US dollars. After buying one for myself from Fantagraphics books I asked from the publisher is there a follow-up planned for this but it seems that only Portfolio 1 was published in Germany as oversized colour edition. The edition distributed in united states was signed and numbered edition to 500.
The edition distributed in Germany was also signed and numbered edition of just 500. This edition was named as Das Leben König Arthur portfolio 1. Otherwise the edition is identical to the one sold in United States.
The remaining 100 copies of the total 1100 print run were artist's proofs. Some A.P.s has been up for sale occasionally. There were APs for both US and German edition.

18. Morphos the Shapechanger
Dark Horse 1996
Colour, text: Harry Hurwitz. Hogarth died before he could make the story complete. Originally this was planned to be as 4-part series. The script for the rest of  the story is included in the book.

19. The Hogarth Tarzan Cold-Cast Statue
20. The Hogarth Tarzan Bronze Statue
Graphitti Designs 1997
Bronze edition limited to 50 statues and cold cast edition to 500. The bronze edition had the retail price of USD 3900 while the cold cast version carried the price tag of USD 295. This is the first official Tarzan statue, cold cast version of the statue is not coloured as such but includes an “earthly colouring”, designed by Hogarth with Joe DeVito, this statue took 3 years in making. Released after Hogarth’s death. I was a little bit disappointed with the colouring (or the lack of it) but anyway this is a very fine statue which will be appreciated and valued in the future. The bronze edition was far too expensive for me to get but it looks really great in the pictures. I have a repainted regular edition myself. It was painted by a professional artist according as far as could the colours Hogarth used in his Tarzan books and pages. The result is very nice.
